RACHEL CARSON (1907–1964) earned a master’s degree in zoology from John Hopkins University in 1932. She was the first woman to pass the civil service exam, and went on to work with the Fish and Wildlife Service, where she became chief editor of publications. Her controversial Silent Spring, a criticism of the use of dangerous pesticides and fertilizers, is now considered ahead of its time. She is often called the mother of the modern environmental movement.
